Ro's photographic practice investigates obsolete techniques. Their investigations focus on light. Making marks with light, directing light, and reproducing light. These investigations often begin with a search for answers and allow for serendipity along the way.
Obsolete techniques form a foundation. They are often simpler, with fewer layers of innovation and associated complexity. Re-examining these methods with a modern perspective often changes many of the fundamental constraints from their original context.
The outcome is either relevant, may be silly (might not be obviously useful beyond temporary amusement), and is preferably both.
Ro builds nonsense tools to solve particular and specific problems. These tools can be cameras that write light differently, and projectors direct light from the uncommon formats produced by these cameras. Making these tools also builds agency beyond simply solving the problem.
